Abstract

Comprehensive sex education including education in sexual violence in the Philippines, despite being legally mandated since 2018, has not been properly implemented in classrooms. Conflicts between parents' cultural and religious beliefs result in the avoidance of adults and educators discussing these matters with children. The researchers used descriptive research design to determine the awareness of elementary pupils on sexual abuse. The respondents were the 125 Grade 5 and 6 students from selected schools in the province of Aurora who answered the adapted survey questionnaire of Halperin et al. (1996). Results revealed that the majority of the students are either unaware or misinformed regarding the consequences and manifestations of child sexual abuse (CSA), which was supported by the reality that their parents did not teach the majority of the students anything about it.  Sex education must be taught appropriately to children at their developmental in their respective households and be followed up in schools, focusing on educating them and correcting their misconceptions about the topic.

Methods

This study employed a descriptive research design to facilitate the completion of its objectives. Descriptive research design usually attempts to establish baseline data by asking answers to what, how, where, and when of a phenomenon under study (Siedlecki, 2020).  A survey method aided by a questionnaire is  used to collect data from the respondents.

Studying the awareness of elementary pupils on sexual abuse will be a helpful basis, especially for educators and curriculum curators in integrating such topics in the curriculum to lessen, if not prevent, this alarming issue.
The result of the study would be beneficial to the following:
To the children. The findings of this study will provide or enrich their learnings on consequences that already involve sexual abuse and become more wary about it to prevent being victimized by it.
 To the parents. The results of this study will assist parents in realizing how important it is to protect their children's safety and to educate them about their legal rights. This study can help them understand the fundamental knowledge their kids need in dealing with child sexual abuse. Knowing this reduces the likelihood that their child will be victimized by sexual abuse.
To the teachers.  The findings of this study will serve as their basis for ascertaining what instructional strategies they must adopt to educate their pupils on sexual abuse or integrate the topic into their classroom discussions. 
To the Department of Education.  The results of this study will be beneficial for them to integrate a broader scope and comprehensive sexuality education in public elementary schools that will increase the awareness of pupils on dealing with sexual abuse.
To the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Since sex education is still frowned upon by the Philippines's conservative community, the result of this study will serve as the agency's reference for curating community programs tackling the prevention of child sexual abuse by educating and enlightening the parents and teachers as well as the children.
To future researchers. Since this kind of issue is rarely studied in the country, this study will be beneficial for future researchers, as it will serve as their database and reference for their research, create room for improvement, and provide further data on the said topic.
